(American/Alabama, 1925-2006)

"Man in Yellow Hat and Bow Tie"

oil on wood panel
signed lower center.
33-1/2" x 18-1/2"

Notes: The engaging work of southern self-taught artists Howard Finister and Moses Tolliver are highlighted in NOAG's upcoming sale. Both artists were featured in the New Orleans Museum of Art's 1993 landmark exhibition and catalogue "Passionate Visions of the American South: Self-Taught Artists from 1940 to the Present" curated by Alice Rae Yelen. The exhibition revealed the importance of a diverse group of talented folk arts whose works reflect their southern culture.

Born to a family of Alabama sharecroppers on the 4th of July, Tolliver held a variety of odd jobs until a tragic work-related accident crushed his legs. No longer able to work, Tolliver turned to painting as form of personal expression, and eventually a livelihood. Often autobiographical in nature, the painting "Man in Yellow Hat and Bow Tie" depicts the artist standing with support of crutches. The whimsical and charming painting "Old Fashion School Bus" has local children patiently seated as the school bus driver navigates the bumpy road.

The Georgia artist, Howard Finster's faith plays an integral part in his paintings and sculptures. Finster devotion came early in his life when he starting to receive visions as a child and began preaching as a teenager. Finister's turned to his attention towards creating art when "A warm feeling came over me to paint sacred art." Through his lively sermons, music, and artwork, Finster's intention was to spread the word of the Lord.
