  • Provenance: Notes: Born just outside of Boston, Randy Leo "Frenchy" Frechette felt the creative urge from a young age. After years of honing his skill, Frenchy was tapped by the band the Boston Horns who invited him to paint one of their performances live. Since then, Frenchy has traveled across the country, painting vignettes of performances, festivals, sporting events, and celebrations live. In 1997, Frenchy found his muse in New Orleans, and in 2015, Frenchy was selected to create the poster for that year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Featuring a portrait of Bo Dollis, the legendary Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians, and Frenchy's distinct style of vibrant colors and energetic brushwork, Dreams Come True: Big Chief Bo Dollis is emblematic of the spirit of New Orleans and the vigor of the Mardi Gras Indians.

Bo Dollis was part of the new generation of Mardi Gras Indians, following in the footsteps of Tootie Montana, who turned away from violence and instead focused on the rich tradition of costuming. Dollis encouraged elaborate costuming that emphasized the classic practice of handmade beadwork and the use of feathers, sequins, and other found objects to build a sculptural silhouette. He also advocated for the regalia and street performances to comment on social justice and political issues. Dollis brought this culture and the music of the Mardi Gras Indians to national attention with a studio album of Mardi Gras Indian music in 1970, establishing the tradition of Mardi Gras Indians as an important part of the African diasporan decorative aesthetic.

Not only did Bo Dollis shape and bring attention to the current culture of Mardi Gras Indians, but Frenchy elevated his contributions by paying tribute to Dollis. Dreams Come True: Big Chief Bo Dollis was praised by critics, viewers, and the Mardi Gras Indians themselves, and the subsequent Jazz Fest poster is one of the most coveted. At the intersection of fine art, Mardi Gras Indian culture, and Jazz Fest culture, Dreams Come True: Big Chief Bo Dollis is a painting uniquely positioned in regional art history.
