  • Provenance: Notes: "I had always loved working on paper, but it was the camaraderie of the artist-printer relationship that tilted the scale indefinitely." – Robert Motherwell

By combining the automatism of Surrealism, the saturation of Color Field, and the expressive gestures of Action Painting, Robert Motherwell cemented his legacy in the canon of art history as a key figure of Abstract Expressionism. Alongside iconic figures such as Pollock, Rothko, and de Kooning, Motherwell helped to redefine Modernism and bring American art to international prominence. While his importance as a painter is well understood, Motherwell's work as a printmaker was equally significant. In his pursuit of expanding his artistic vision, he also advanced printmaking as a technique.

One of the most experimental printmakers of the twentieth century, Motherwell worked on several series throughout his career, none more iconic than the Basque Suite. Consisting of ten seminal screenprints, the Basque Suite captured the most influential elements of Motherwell's oeuvre. The gestural, jet-black forms create a confident and aggressive composition, softened by saturated hues of pure color, and punctuated by breaks of blank space. These signature components are recognizable not only in his prints, but in his paintings as well.

The title refers to the Basque language spoken in Spain, which is both polysynthetic and agglutinative. Similarly, in the way that multiple Basque words can be strung together to create a new word with a different meaning, Motherwell utilized multiple screenprintings over a base sheet that he had printed nearly four years earlier to create each work in the suite. The Basque Suite was met with acclaim when it was first published, elevating printmaking as a valuable technique. Today, the complete Basque Suite can be found in many permanent collections around the world, including the Tate, London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
