  • Provenance: Harry Winston; likely purchased from Winston by Thomas Powell Fowler Milbank for his fiancee Loyce Stinson Hand Hawk Butler in 1972; acquired by Bonnie Swearingen from Loyce Stinson Milbank in a private sale in 1979; The Estate of Bonnie Bolding Swearingen, Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Notes: This stunning ring was likely purchased from renowned diamond jeweler Harry Winston by Thomas Powell Fowler Milbank in 1972, at the time of his wedding to Loyce Stinson Hand Hawk Butler. While it would be tantalizing to assume the ring was acquired as an engagement ring for his fiancee, it would be pure conjecture since no confirmatory documentation exists. It was the second marriage for Milbank, scion of the wealthy and socially prominent Milbank family of New York (he was the great-grandson of industrialist and philanthropist Jeremiah Milbank) and the fourth for the socialite Butler, of the famed and influential Stinson aviation family. Milbank had been divorced from his first wife for over twenty-five years, while Loyce Butler had recently seen the resolution of her very public and contentious divorce from the Broadway producer Michael Butler (the cheekily named "hippie producer" responsible for the rock musical Hair). The couple was quietly wed in New York with only a few of their many friends and associates in attendance and honeymooned in Paris. Alas, Loyce and Thomas' marriage was not to prove a lasting one, and within several years the couple separated; their divorce had only just been finalized by the time of his sudden death at the age of 60 in 1974.
Records from the Swearingen Estate reveal that Bonnie purchased the ring privately from Loyce in 1979.

This lot is accompanied by two photographs of Bonnie Swearingen wearing this ring: one with her husband John Swearingen, 1980s, 7" x 5", the other with President Ronald Reagan and Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos at the White House State Dinner for President and Mrs. Marcos, September 16, 1982, signed "To Bonnie Swearingen - With Every Good Wish & Best Regards, Ronald Reagan" also signed "F. Marcos", 10-1/8" x 8"
