A. Gilbert
(British, 19th Century)

"Leisure Hours"

oil on canvas
signed lower right. Presented in a giltwood exhibition frame.
27" x 31"

Provenance: Sotheby's, London, November 11, 1998, lot 135, Victorian Pictures including Works by Burne-Jones and his Circle, offered as a work by Albert Thomas Jarvis Gilbert (British, 1877-1927); Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. There is a small loss of pigment to the upper left corner and a pinprick-sized one two inches to the right of it. Light abrading to pigment is present along the lower left frame edge and to the top right edge. Painting exhibits previous signs of professional restoration, including wax relining, revarnishing and conservative inpainted "retouching" to a few (1/8"-1/4") spots in the sky and the proper left wrist of the figure on the left. Restorative inpainting was also applied in thin lines (as a filler) to the craquelure on the woman's dress on the right and to the wicker backing of the chair in which she sits. Light craquelure is scattered throughout the painting.
