Achille Perelli
(Italian/Louisiana, 1822-1891)

"Nature Morte: Woodcock"

painted plaster relief
incised signature upper left and incised "New Orleans" upper right, and "Morton's Auction" label en verso.

14-3/4" x 11-3/4" x 4"

Provenance: Morton's Auction, New Orleans

Notes: Achille Perelli studied art with the Italian sculptor Galli and at the Academia di Belle Arti in Milan. As a young man, Perelli joined Garibaldi's forces during the Italian revolution of 1848. When Garibaldi was defeated, Perelli was forced to leave Italy. Eventually settling in New Orleans, Perelli became an active member of the art community and, along with fellow artists Andres Molinary and Bror Anders Wikstrom, organized the Southern Art Union in 1881.

An avid sportsman, Perelli brought his freshly killed fish, birds and small game back to his studio to create accurate nature mortes. The nature morte motif of fish or game hanging by a string from a nail was a popular decor in New Orleans homes in the 19th century.
