After Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A.

British, 1723-1792

"The Age of Innocence"

oil on canvas
19th century, unsigned, artist and title stenciled on frame, after the ca. 1785 painting now conserved (but presently not on display) at Tate, London.
In an antique frame.
30" x 25", framed 39-1/2" x 34-1/2"

  • Provenance: The Collection of the Late Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Notes: This delightful character study of a young girl was instantly popular with British society, and numerous copies were created. It did not receive the name under which it is now so commonly referred until 1794, when an ambitious engraver thought a more poetic descriptor would appeal to the masses.
  • Condition: **Faint craquelure, stretcher marks and darkening of the varnish layer. UV light reveals inpainting to proper right arm and hand, in the background, to the right of her face, and a few spots in the dress. Frame with marks, nicks, abrasions, cracks and minor losses.
