Alabama Silver Covered Butter Dish

third quarter 19th century, by James Conning (ca. 1813-1872), Mobile, Alabama, of short waisted cylindrical form with beaded edging and ringed cow's masque handles, the domed hemispherical lid with recumbent cow finial lifting to reveal the pierced tray over an ice reservoir, the whole decorated with guilloche-engraved centering floral-mantled cartouches engraved with lakeside scenes and raised on four cast and applied rococo-scroll feet, monogrammed "MMH".
h. 5-1/2", w. 7-1/4", dia. 6-3/4"

  • Condition: **Note: While most of Conning's pieces are coin silver, this piece seems to be a mixture of both coin silver and silverplate elements; the body, liner and lid appear to be silverplate, and the cast and applied elements appear to be silver. The piece has not been tested, however, and New Orleans Auction Galleries makes no representation as to the quality or nature of the metals in the piece.

In generally good used condition, with some scattered bumps and dings on the lid, with two 1/2" shallow dents. Moderate wear to the engraving. The interior lid has a crescent-shaped rough patch covering about half of it, probably an original construction flaw; there is also an irregular 1/2" diameter dark spot where the finial is attached, again probably part of the original construction. Marked, on the underside, "J. Conning / Mobile".
