American Aesthetic Movement Giltwood Center Table
fourth quarter 19th century, New York, the inset onyx top over an egg-and-dart- and foliate-carved apron with winged angel masques, crowning each of four reeded legs joined by beaded X-form stretchers, centered by a finial.

Notes: The finely detailed masques and utilization of a Mexican onyx top is emblematic of the work of the first New York decorating firms of the 1880s and 1890s, including Pottier & Stymus, George Schastey, Herts Brothers and the successor to Herter Brothers, William Baumgartem.

Condition: **The inset onyx top has a chip on its underside. It extends up to be visible from the side, but is not visible looking down on it.
The surface appears to be original, with relatively few abrasions, scrapes and losses to the gilt and underlying gesso. Imbedded dirt.
Finial is either a replacement or a fragment of a larger finial that was once on the table.
Two of the disc feet have chips/losses. There are no indications this was once fitted with casters.
Probably American, the unfinished surfaces are painted or have yellow boulle, making it difficult to ascertain woods. Some sort of pine appears to be used for the rim of the top, possibly white pine. Other wood is generally denser and tight-grained.
