American Aesthetic Movement Mahogany Morris Chair

fourth quarter 19th century, New York, the stiles capped by twisting leaf carving, the adjustable back positioned with a rod and cast brass stops, the arms with panels of like foliate carving, raised on square legs with a squashed ball-and-claw foot.
h. 45-1/2"

Other Notes: While the carving on the piece is reminiscent of that on objects attributed to Tiffany's associated artists, the distinctive foot on the present chair corresponds to that on a number of pieces now attributed to the New York City shop of George Schastey, including an inlaid satinwood dressing table in the collection of the Munson Williams Proctor Institute, Utica, New York; an armchair in the Richard Driehaus Museum, Chicago, Illinois; and a sidechair at the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
