American Aesthetic Movement Metal-Inlaid Ebonized Cabinet

ca. 1882-83, attributed to Pottier & Stymus, New York, the projecting fretwork cornice over a marquetry band and etched rectilinear looking glass, flanked by a pair of graduated shelves, the case with an onyx top and a pair of glazed and etched doors over inlaid panels, flanked by canted shelves, with the stenciled production number "69533", suggesting the piece was produced about 1882-83.
h. 75", w. 52-1/2", d. 17"

  • Condition: **In very good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits normal shrinkage, wear and indications of age and use, including some minor inpainting of scratches to the ebonizing. The lower shelves exhibit a number of parallel lines of finish loss.

The case is solid and sturdy.

The mirror plates and silvering are in good condition.

There are losses to the fretwork galleries on the shelves flanking the upper mirror. The lost sections are about: 3"; 6"; 8"; 2" and 4" long.

The onyx top on the center of the case, apparently original, exhibits a fore-aft break, and a crack that could be a tight break. The smaller corner onyx tops are in good condition.

The cupboard doors retain their lock, but no key. The silk velvet interior is almost certainly original.
