American Chippendale Mahogany Serpentine Chest

third quarter 18th century, school of Goddard/Townsend, Newport, Rhode Island, with a bank of four graduated drawers with beaded edges, raised on ogee bracket feet.
h. 34", top w. 40-3/8", case w. 38-1/4", d. 23-5/8"

  • Condition: **In very good refinished and restored condition. The piece shows normal shrinkage, and minor rubbing and mars to the finish.

The case is sturdy and free of movement at the glue joints.

The upper drawer is missing its lock. All other locks are present. No key. The brasses are replaced. There is a previous drilling for a pull behind each back plate. There are a couple small flakes to the cock-beading on the perimeter of the drawers.

One single board side has a filled vertical shrinkage crack.

The back has been re-nailed to the case. It retains old holes from previous nails. The back is comprised of two boards. Substantial areas of the lower board have been scrubbed of their patina. Some matching patina remains. The interior of the back exhibits consistent coloring on both upper and lower boards.

The glue blocks on the bottom of the case appear to be original.
