American Classical Mahogany Pier Table

ca. 1815, New York, School of Charles-Honore Lannuier, the marble top with a reeded edge, over a figured frieze with die-cut brass along its lower edge, raised on marble columns with gilt-bronze capitals and bases, the back mounted with a mirror plate, on a low shelf, the vertical face of the shelf with ebony molding at the top and bottom edges, the moldings with inlaid brass and light wood stringing, raised on later bun feet. The present table shares design characteristics of pier tables associated with Lannuier, and some constructon details with the work of his cross-town competitor, Duncan Phyfe.
h. 33-1/4", w. 42", d. 18"

  • Condition: **A superior New York Classical pier table in "as found" condition.

The marble top, presumably period, exhibits a number of chips and flakes to its perimeter edges.

The apron appears to be missing bronze mounts. The die-cut brass on its lower edge has been replaced on one side by an ebonized molding.

One rear pilaster has been replaced with faux-grained wood in place of the marble.

The piece exhibits shrinkage, wear, abrasions, small veneer issues and other indications of age and use. The lower shelf does NOT exhibit any of the typical shrinkage tears to the veneer or cracks one generally sees.

There are some missing pieces to the ebony molding on the top and bottom vertical edges of the low shelf. The wood string inlay that is found in parts may be a replacement for brass inlay. Some brass string inlay remains.

The bun feet are recent replacements.
