American Classical Mahogany Sideboard, first quarter 19th century, school of Joseph Barry, Philadelphia, the projecting ends with a drawer over a door with a Gothic arch, and flanked by herms with carved, bearded Turk's heads on reeded columns with paw feet, joined by canted sections with arched and quatrefoil panels centered by bowed doors with like panels, raised on beehive feet, h. 50-1/4", w. 92-1/4", d. 27-1/2".
- Condition: In overall very good condition. The piece appears to have been professionally polished and restored within about the past decade, with attendant minor veneer repairs. It exhibits normal indications of age and use with very minor light surface scratches and mars. The arched backboard appears to be a later replacement, probably utilizing old veneers. There is a small splinter loss to the corner edge of the beading at the top of the back board, about 15mm long and 2mm deep. The top of each pedestal end is cross-banded around the perimeter, with line stringing separating the banding from a central veneered panel. As no other line line stringing appears elsewhere on the piece, it raises the possibility of a restoration or alteration. The brasses are replaced. One escutcheon plate is missing from a central door. Key is present and functional. The two side drawers are missing their locksets. The other locks give indications of being antique replacements.
