American Classical Mahogany Worktable, ca. 1825, attributed to Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856), Philadelphia, the cross-banded lift-top fitted with an interior looking glass and opening to reveal a segmented interior retaining its period red paper lining, over a pair of drawers on a trestle base with paired dolphin-carved supports and turned stretchers, h. 30-3/4", w. 24-1/4", d. 20-1/4". An apparently identical table, attributed to Quervelle, is illustrated in Boor's, Philadelphia Empire Furniture, pp. 266-267.

  • Condition: In good "as found" condition. The sides and back of the case are in untouched old finish that is lightly alligatored. The top and drawer faces have been cleaned, with some past restoration and attendant polishing. The base may have been cleaned. There are losses to the applied molding on the vertical edge of the top. A loss on the front edge is about 1/2" wide, and one on the side is about 1/4" wide. Losses on the back side of the top, and are about 2" and 6" wide. The back of the case is finished and veneered. The top exhibits some light lifting of veneer, and indications it has been previously slit and laid back down at places. There are shrinkage tears to the top veneer, most notably a tear and gap across the center of the top, with a related veneer loss of about 1-1/2" by 3/4". There is evidence of past minor veneer repairs to the drawer faces. The mirror in the lift-top appears to be original. It exhibits some areas of deterioration to the silvering. There are some areas where the paper lining on the interior elements is loose at its corners. Two of the crimson paper dividers are out of place but present. There is a shrinkage crack running across the interior bottom. The drawer pulls are old replacements. NOTE: The pattern of discoloration/staining on the interior of the lid of this piece appears to exactly match that on the piece illustrated pp 266-267 of Boor, "Philadelphia Empire Furniture". If this is the same piece, as it appears to be, the crimson paper interior has been taken out and turned around so that the small compartments are now in the front.
