American Egyptian Revival Gilt-Bronze-Mounted Rosewood Sofa

attributed to Gustave Herter, ca. 1860-1865, the shaped back joined to open arms on pharaoh-head supports, the bowed seat rail of tripartite form, raised on carved legs with hoof feet.
h. 38-1/2", w. 78", d. 30"

Notes: A related earlier example of this sofa, conserved by the Victorian Society of Maine, Morse-Libby Mansion, Portland, Maine, is illustrated on page 132 of Herter Brothers Furniture & Interiors for a Gilded Age. The Morse-Libby suite features carved putti heads on the arm supports. Other examples more similar to the present sofa have employed children's heads and classical women's/angel heads in the Renaissance Revival taste. The present Egyptian-inspired supports have surfaced with much less frequency than the other variations.

  • Condition: **The frame is in good, solid condition. No breaks or sign of previous damage. The finish is likely an old "re-finish". Minor dings to the legs and arms. Lacking casters. There is an old professional repair to the right arm where it joins the back. There are 2 plugged screws holes on the top of the arm.
