American Federal Cherrywood and String-Inlaid Chest

first quarter 19th century, the chest with a rectangular top with an inlaid frieze of interlocking arches, above four graduated long drawers and scalloped valance.
h. 45", w. 39", d. 19"

  • Condition: **In "as found" condition. The piece exhibits shrinkage, mars and wear including a number of stains to the top. There is some shrinkage separation between the inlaid mahogany board edging the top and the cherry top.

Drawers exhibit wear to their bottoms and some wear to the runners. The drawers are loose at their joints.

One drawer is missing about one-half the veneer of its inlaid escutcheon. The oval panel in the apron is missing veneer. Similar panels on the returns retain veneer.

Retains old iron locks. No key.

There is an old rectilinear patch to one side of the case. On that same side, there is an unstained splice on the outside of the rear leg, about 3" x 3".

The drawer bottoms and drawer sides appear to be crafted of butternut.
