American Federal Cherrywood Sugar Chest

first quarter 19th century, probably Kentucky, the case with exposed dovetails on all four corners, the interior fitted with two dividers, raised on splayed legs joined by a scalloped apron.
h. 18", w. 23", d. 14-1/2"

  • Condition: **In very good restored condition. In good "as found" condition.

The piece exhibits normal wear, mars, abrasions, shrinkage and indications of age and use. The finish is thin on the top, with some light stains and areas of lost finish.

There is a shrinkage separation in the top, about 4" long, as well as some other tight shrinkage cracks. It is possible there is a splice patch to the upper 1/4" board on the top. The quarter round moldings in the perimeter of the underside of the top appear to be later additions.

The lock and plate are present. No key is present. The interior contains two mortised-in fore-aft dividers, one of which is split but securely affixed.

The legs and case are sturdy and solid. The case is of dovetailed construction. The underside of the case retains a good dark patina. The color of the legs and the presence of dark stain applied to the underside of the legs and aprons indicate there may be past restorations or replacements.
