American Federal Mahogany and String-Inlaid Sideboard

ca. 1800, with curved ends and boldly serpentined front, the conforming top with a line-inlaid border above a central long drawer, above a pair of cabinet doors and flanked by curved cabinets on each side, raised on tapered legs.
h. 40", w. 76-1/2", d. 27-1/2"

  • Condition: **In overall very good condition, the polished surface with minor wear, and the case exhibiting shrinkage, wear, minor past veneer repairs and normal indications of age and use.

The top exhibits a tight filled shrinkage crack extending in about 15" from one end. There are a couple losses to the perimeter crossbanded veneer, one about 1/4" wide by 1" deep, the other about 1" by 1".

The drawer pulls are in their original drillings/holes. The pulls appear to be antique with a number of later posts and nuts. The locks are mostly replaced. Functional key is present.

The case is solid and sturdy, with no movement at the joints noted.

There are two small losses to the inlaid geometric banding at the bottom edge of the case, each about 1" long. Toward the back of one side is a somewhat mismatched section of replaced banding about 3" long.
