American Federal Vine- and Bud-Inlaid Walnut Chest

early 19th century, probably Virginia, with a bank of four graduated drawers, each with ovoid line stringing and flanked by stiles with vine and bud inlay, and a scalloped apron, raised on flare feet in the Hepplewhite taste, having yellow pine and white pine secondary woods.
h. 36-1/2", w. 38-3/4", d. 20-1/2"

  • Condition: **In good condition. The drawers drag a little due to wear to their runners. The feet show some old professional glued repairs but appear original. Some old stains to the inside of the drawers. The right side of the case has five plugged holes approximately 1/2" in diameter each; they line up with the drawer runners. Also two pieced-in patches to the lower edge of this side. Surface appears to be an old refinish. Minor old repairs to the beading around the drawers. All locks present. Brasses probably replaced but in the original borings. No sign of missing inlay. Secondary wood is pine. The top is a two-board top with an additional 1" strip at the back edge. The sides are two boards seamed down the middle.
