American Federal Walnut and Line-Strung Chest

ca. 1800, in the Hepplewhite taste, each of the four graduated drawers with inlaid line-stringing and a shield-form escutcheon, the perimeter edges beaded, over a scalloped apron and flare feet.
h. 41", w. 40-1/2", d. 19-1/4"

  • Condition: **In good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits some normal minor repairs, including repairs to the drawer runners and the line stringing, most notably the stringing on the apron on one side of the case. The finish is light/very thin, with normal mars, wear and abrasions.

The top exhibits a shrinkage separation at a lamination line where two boards are joined, and a shrinkage crack extending in from one side of the case. There are similar straight-line shrinkage separations on each side of the case. There is one splice to the top, about 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/4".

Brasses appear to be antique, probably of the period, but other drillings suggest they are not original to the case. The drawers retain their locks. There is no key present.
