American Late Classical Mahogany Secretary Bookcase

second quarter 19th century, probably New York, the form typically associated with the manufacturing firm of Joseph Meeks & Sons, of diminutive proportions, the upper section with a projecting, flared cornice above an arched frieze and a pair of glazed doors, flanked by turned columns, the lower case with a fold-down writing surface above three long drawers, also flanked by columns and raised on turned legs.

  • Literature: A similar secretary is illustrated in the 1833 Broadside advertisement of Joseph Meeks & Sons, 43 & 45 Broad Street, New York, published by Endicott and Swett, New York, illustration #41.
  • Condition: **In "as found" condition. Scattered old veneer patches to the cornice molding. Small veneer chips around the mid-section row of drawers. Shrinkage to the seams of the flip-over writing deck. Scattered rubs to the lower case. Good overall patina with a rich, dark finish.
    Note: This form is typically a foot or two taller and a foot or two wider.
