American Late Federal Birdseye Maple Tall Case Clock

early 19th century, the face signed "Charles Thum, Philadelphia", with an eight-day time and strike movement, the hood with a swan's-neck bonnet top and three turned finials, the central door flanked by turned columns and raised on ogee bracket feet.
h. 85", w. 22", d. 12"

  • Condition: In good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits normal mars, blemishes, shrinkage and indications of age and use.

    Case appears tight and solid.

Shims have been added at the saddle board supporting the works.

Key for waist door is present. Pendulum and weights are present. Winding key is lacking.

The lower section exhibits vertical shrinkage cracks on each side of the case. The back board has extra boards, about 4" high, and the difference in width between the base and waist suggests the waist may have been reduced by that amount.
