American Late Federal Cherrywood Sugar Chest

early 19th century, with flush-paneled sides, the front panel mortised and pegged into the leg posts, terminating into turned legs.
h. 28-1/2", w. 36-1/2", d. 18"

  • Condition: **In very good restored condition.

The case is very solid, with no play noted in the legs or case. Of pegged construction.

It exhibits normal shrinkage, mars and wear, including some scuffs and shallow gouges in the top, and shrinkage cracks to the front and side body boards. The top has a splice, about 3/4" wide, running its width, at the seam of the two other boards comprising the top. There is a shrinkage crack about 6" long in the top.

The case retains its lock but no key nor the base plate that engages the lock. The interior retains what appears to be faint shadows from a missing fore-aft divider.
