American Late Victorian Three-Piece Mahogany Dining Suite

ca. 1900, in the manner of R. J. Horner, comprised of a banquet table, a sideboard/buffet and a curved glass china cabinet, the circular table with a leaf- and scroll-carved apron supported by seated, winged griffins, centered by a split column, opening to accommodate three skirted and five un-skirted leaves, h. 30-1/4", dia. 60", total extended length 164-1/2", the bowfront buffet with a band of drawers over a pair of bowfront doors, flanked by doors and a full-width drawer below, all adorned with applied carving, and the china cabinet in like decor with a serpentine glass door and rounded glass side panels, h. 63-1/2", w. 57", d. 19-1/2".


Provenance: Reverend William State Jacobs, Houston, Texas, to his daughter-in-law Ruth Farrington Jacobs Faris to the current owner.

Notes: The present table was reputedly a gift to Jacobs from his congregation, the First Presbyterian Church. Franklin Roosevelt is said to have dined at this table following his speech nominating Al Smith as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee at the 1928 Houston National Convention.
