American Chippendale Banded Mahogany Bonnet-Top Chest-on-Chest, second half 18th century, the upper case with a central shell-carved drawer and flanked by two smaller drawers and four graduated long drawers below, the base fitted with four graduated long drawers, raised on ogee bracket feet, h. 80-1/2", w. 43", d. 21-1/2".

  • Condition: In good restored and re-built condition. The piece exhibits normal wear, minor mars, abrasions and indications of age and use. The base exhibits some slight looseness at glue joints but is suitably sturdy for use for some time. The dovetails are consistent top to bottom. The drawers in the upper section are of thinner woods, with sharper edges and inconsistent patina. Some drawers may have one side of white pine, and the other of poplar. Drawer bottoms on the lower section are of oak. An unidentified knotty pine is also utilized in the construction. Drawer pulls are replaced. Feet are old replacements. The patina on the upper section of the top, behind the bonnet, is inconsistent with the rest of the backs. Three locks are present. It does not appear the rest of the case was fitted with locks.
