American Renaissance Revival Rosewood Parlor Suite, Attributed to Herter Brothers

ca. 1869, comprised of a settee, h. 47", w. 60", d. 32", and a pair of side chairs, h. 39-1/2", w. 20", d. 19", each with a leaf-carved crest centered by a painted plaque depicting a head in profile, the settee with closed arms, the front seat rails with marquetry inlay, raised on characteristic Herter trumpet-form legs and retaining their period gilt incising throughout.

  • Notes: A parlor suite in this pattern is presently in the collection of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut. Their suite was purchased ca. 1877 by the home's second owner, Charles Mathews, because it "matched what LeGrand Lockwood had ordered."
  • Condition: **In "as found" condition. The settee is sturdy. There is a small chip to the very tip of the crest. There are shrinkage cracks to both arms where the protruding buttons are attached. These buttons are likely not original as they are made from some material other than wood. Appears to retain its original finish and gilt highlights.

Side chair #1: The crest is loose at the shoulder joints. Only traces of the circular portrait remains. Small losses to the frame at the shoulders near the upholstery line. There are a few upholstery tack holes here as well that go beyond the upholstery line.

Side chair #2: There is a break at the right shoulder joint. The crest is slightly loose.

Both side chairs exhibit losses to the small circular inlaid rings in the front seat rail.

Original finish with some flaking to the finish mostly on their back sides. All pieces appear to retain their original India comb rubber casters. The settee is lacking its rear leg casters.
