American Renaissance Revival Walnut Bookcase, Philadelphia, third quarter 19th century, the broken-arch pediment crest centered by a carved bust of Shakespeare, the cove-molded cornice over three doors, each with arched colorless and stained glass panels, flanked by carved full-figured allegorical maidens, h. 84-1/2", w. 78-1/2", d. 20-3/4".

  • Condition: In good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits normal mars, wear, blemishes, abrasions and rubbing. The finish appears to be an old and/or original finish that has been subsequently over-coated (presumably with shellac). There are some runs in the later top coat. Tight and solid. The piece is of bolt-together construction. Both finials exhibit breaks at the narrow turnings just above the large body. One is poorly repaired/misaligned. The colored glass panels in the doors appear to be later additions. They are not delineated from the colorless glass with mullions. The case may have been artfully reduced in height.
