American Rococo Revival Carved Rosewood and Marble-Top Dressing Mirror

mid-19th century, attributed to J. H. Belter, New York, the pierced floral- and grape-carved crest over an arched mirror plate supported by carved columns, joined to a serpentine low base with a white marble top.
h. 72-1/4", w. 47", d. 16-1/2"

  • Provenance: Descended in an Uptown New Orleans family.
  • Condition: **In very good restored condition. The surface appears to be an old or original finish that has been recently over-coated with a tinted finish. The crest is very well carved and does not exhibit any evidence of repaired breaks. The columnar mirror supports are segmented, suggesting the current piece has been reduced from an etagere. It exhibits some old repairs, most notably at the joints. The mirror is now joined to the uprights by modern screws. The board at the back of the base top appears to be a replacement. The marble does not fit beneath its projecting lip as it should. The molded edge does not appear to be of the period style. The back of the base is not dovetailed, also suggesting it may have been construction from an artfully reduced etagere. A very striking lot with nice scale and a wonderfully carved crest.
