American Rococo Revival Giltwood Overmantel Mirror, mid-19th century, the convex-molded frame with an arched top set with a pierced, scrolled crest, with a center shell finial, on a panel-framed ground decorated with trailing flowers, with a scroll-molded base and scroll molding on either lower side, h. 86", w. 68".

  • Condition: In overall good condition. The surface is largely original gilt, with rubbing, shrinkage, scattered losses to gilt and underlying gesso and some scattered gold over-painting. At some point, the surface was over-coated with shellac. An element is missing from the top center of the crest, above the existing carving. To the side of the crest, there are a couple missing pieces of half-round molding, one about 6" long, the other about 2" long. Scattered small losses to the carved elements including a portion of vine in the crest, about 2" long, and a couple leaf tips and small section of vine on the left upper corner. The mirror plate is crisp and clear. It appears to be a later replacement.
