American Rococo Revival Rosewood and Ebonized Armoire

third quarter 19th century, the arched top with an ornately carved crest, above a case fitted with two curtain-backed glazed doors and a pair of side-by-side drawers in the base.
h. 128", w. 73", d. 26"

  • Condition: **In very good polished and restored condition. Exhibits minor rubbing, wear and shrinkage.

The assembled case is tight and solid.

The crest appears to be later. The ebonizing on the trim is later.

The glazing on the doors is later. Construction and lack of marks from backing behind the glazing indicates it was probably originally fitted with wood panels. There is a hole drilled in the back, about 2-1/2" diameter. Four old, presumably original shelves are present; there do not appear to be enough bars/brackets for the sawtooth supports to hold them all.

All locks present. Key is not.

There is applied scalloped carving on the bottom of the sides. About a 12" long section is missing from one side. The other has a missing section that is detached but present.

NOTE: This appears to be an American New Orleans Market armoire, of the type that were sold in the warerooms of the Mallard and McCracken firms.
