American Rococo Revival Rosewood Half-Tester Bed

third quarter 19th century, attributed to the New Orleans warerooms of William and James McCracken, the tester of serpentine form supported by tapering octagonal posts centered by a paneled headboard with a crisply carved shell-and-floral crest, the side rails with foliate- and scroll-carved brackets joined to a wrap-around footboard with carved eagle heads at each corner, the head posts now reduced in height.
h. 103", inside w. 64", l. 81-1/2", outside w. 71", l. 90-1/2"

  • Condition: **In good "as found" condition. The surface exhibits indications of past restoration, including some re-veneering to the posts with correct rosewood and some repairs to moldings. The piece has normal mars, abrasions and indications of age and use, most now with polish over them.

The assembled bed is very solid and sturdy with no movement noted when the footboard was shook.

The tester crest is a later replacement. The posts appear to have been reduced by about 10", and now exhibit veneer patches where the old bracket dowels were.
