American Rococo Revival Rosewood Half-Tester Bed, Attributed to Charles Lee

third quarter 19th century, Manchester, Massachusetts, produced for the New Orleans and Southern market, the beaded serpentine tester supported by tapering posts with foliate-carved capitals supporting a headboard with a fruit- and cabochon-carved crest over a pair of shaped panels joined by rails to footposts with telescoping fruits designed to support mosquito netting.
h. 121", inside w. 63", l. 77", outside w. 68", l. 85"

Provenance: Formerly part of the decor at the "Blanc-Labatut-Parker-Erlanger House", 924 Moss Street, New Orleans, thence by descent to the heirs of Walter and Anita Parker.

  • Condition: **In "as found" condition. There is a veneer loss to the bottom of the right front post. Minor scattered shrinkage cracks and light wear consistent with age and use. One telescoping mosquito netting pole is broken off inside the footboard post. The other is okay but the large finish is loose. The headboard posts have been cut down approx. 7" from the top; however, the parts are present. One piece of molding missing just below the carving on the headboard. Good color and patina. There are tears and distress to the tester fabric.
