American School (Second Quarter 19th Century), "Portrait of a Man and Woman", pair of oils on canvas, unsigned, each 27" x 22". Each presented in a handsome, period, mahogany frame.


  • Condition: Man: Scattered craquelure, accretions and surface soiling. Faint stretcher marks around edges, along with slight abrading. Horizontal convex dimple at bottom of canvas, 1" tear to bottom right edge of canvas, 1.5" diagonal scratch lower right. Scattered pinprick losses of paint at middle bottom. Evidence of past restoration: scattered inpainting to background, three areas of inpainting corresponding to old repairs and patches en verso. Layer of surface soiling and dulling of varnish layer. Woman: In generally good condition. Scattered craquelure, accretions and surface soiling. Faint stretcher marks around edges, along with abrading. Evidence of past restoration: scattered inpainting mostly in upper third and bottom right, inpainting corresponding to old tear at woman's proper right ear and bonnet area with patch en verso. Layer of surface soiling and dulling to varnish layer.
