American Sterling Silver Gilt Chalice

dated 1943, by Phillip Marcus Kohl (1877-1959), Minneapolis, Minnesota, the bowl above a tapering octagonal standard with conforming knop and base, the latter with engraved laurel band centering a Canterbury cross set with an emerald-cut imitation aquamarine, the underside with presentation inscription "To Rev. Alberic Kullman S.O.Cist. Ordained June 6, 1943, loving remembrance from his father".

  • Notes: The bowl, standard and base are sterling silver gilt, but the interior joining bolt fixed to the bowl and its retaining nut are gilt base metal. Alberic Carl Kullmann (1905-1973), later known as Carl J. Kullman, was born in New Jersey and studied at the Cistercian Monastery in Okauchee, Wisconsin; he was ordained at the St. John's Abbey Church in Collegeville, Minnesota. He later served in Mississippi and San Diego, California, where he is buried.
