American Transitional Late Classical-into-Rococo Revival Mahogany Four-Post Bed

ca. 1850, attributed to C. Lee, Manchester, Massachusetts, with four cluster-column posts, the paneled headboard with a fruit-carved crest.
h. 102", inside w. 59-1/2", l. 76-1/2", outside w. 67", l. 85"

Provenance: Henry Ward Beecher/Harriet Beecher Stowe, Croton-on-Hudson, New York.

  • Condition: **In good refinished and restored condition. The piece exhibits evidence of routine past small repairs, a small amount of filler along the rails, and normal blemishes, shrinkage and mars consistent with age and use.

The assembled bed is sturdy and stable.

There is some sun-bleaching to one side, most notably the rail.

The rails have normal mars and abrasions to the surface along their top edge. There is one veneer loss to the top of one rail about 1/4" deep and 1" long, and another near it of about 1/4" diameter. There are sliver losses of veneer to the other edges of one of the base blocks at the bottom of a post.

The quatrefoil brackets at the upper "ears" of the headboard may be a later addition.

NOTE: This bed is illustrated in Joseph Osborne's Washing the Elephant: An Authorized Biography of Bettie Esther Parham, where it is credited as having been in the Beecher family.
