Andrew Jackson Signed Land Grant

dated September 8, 1835, a partially printed document signed by Andrew Jackson for land in Holmes county Ohio, granted to Ebenezer Purdy, together with a lithographic portrait of Jackson.
grant 15-5/8" x 9-7/8"; portrait 10-1/8" x 7-1/8"

Notes: Unclaimed lands in the United States Military District of the Northwest Territory, originally set aside in 1796 by Congress as compensation to Revolutionary War veterans, were offered for public sale on March 3, 1803, two days after Ohio was admitted to the Union. By 1832, the price had dropped from $2.00 per acre for a minimum 320 acres to $1.25 per acre for a minimum of 40 acres. The present lot records the sale of 40 acres in Holmes County Ohio to Ebenezer Purdy, who had six months earlier married Elizabeth Hobbs. He was born in Wayne County Pennsylvania around 1910, and died in 1846 in Richland Township, Holmes County Ohio on the property purchased in 1835.
