  • Provenance: Although Anna Althea Hills' life was short, her artistic achievements and civic engagement profoundly influenced a new generation of painters. She is best remembered for her Post-Impressionist style, her commitment to working en plein air, and her deep reverence for the California landscape. At the same time, she distinguished herself as an influential advocate for the arts within her community.

Hills spent much of her early life traveling, first accompanying her minister father throughout the Midwest and later pursuing formal artistic training. She began her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, where her work was noted for its dynamic palette-knife technique and distinctly visible, expressively thick layers of paint. She subsequently continued her education at Cooper Union in New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris, followed by several years of travel across Europe. In Europe, she was mentored by painter and printmaker Arthur Wesley Dow, watercolorist Rhoda Holmes Nichols, and landscape painter John Noble Barlow.

During this period, Hills' work was characterized by a darker tonal palette and a focus on interior scenes. However, this stylistic approach changed significantly following her return to the United States. Drawn to Southern California, she spent time in the greater Los Angeles area before ultimately settling in Laguna Beach. Like many before her, the region's distinctive light and varied landscape inspired Hills, and she gravitated to the coastal cliffs, deserts, and enigmatic beauty of the ocean.

In addition to her artistic accomplishments, Hills played a pivotal role in fostering regional art communities. Already an accoladed artist, she was warmly received by her peers in Laguna Beach. In 1918, Hills along with Edgar Payne, William Wendt, and others, founded the Laguna Beach Art Association, now known as the Laguna Art Museum. She served as its president for six years and was instrumental in encouraging the establishment of a similar organization in Carmel-by-the-Sea, which was eventually founded in 1927 as the Carmel Art Association. Following her death in 1930, Hills' legacy was further solidified through her substantial donations of paintings to institutions throughout Orange County, as well as by a commemorative bas-relief at the Laguna Art Museum.
