Antebellum New Orleans Market Walnut Tester Bed, mid-19th century, the projecting cyma-molded cornice raised on tapering posts with chamfered corners, supporting a paneled headboard with a shell- and foliate-carved shell crest, h. 112", inside, w. 60", l. 78", outside, w. 69", l. 87".

  • Condition: In very good restored and refinished condition. The piece exhibits normal minor wear, shrinkage, abrasions, and indications of age and use. The assembled bed is very tight and sturdy. The pleated tester upholstery is in very good condition. There is a veneer loss to the stile at the lower corner of the headboard panel, about 1" by 1/2". There are a few scattered smaller colored-in veneer losses most notably to the top edges of the rails and feet. The strips of wood that support the bed slats on the inside of the rails are replaced. Each rail, at the center bottom edge, exhibits holes, surface roughness, finish loss and a shadow indicating something was attached at that point.
