Notes: A native of Denmark, Jacobsen was born into a musical family; his father was a well-respected violin maker with his own workshop. He attended the prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Upon completion of his studies, Jacobsen emigrated to the United States, settling along the New Jersey shore. Initially supporting himself as a professional musician, Jacobsen began to sketch the boats in nearby New York harbor in his free time. This led to commissions from ship captains, and by 1876 he was listed as an artist in the New York City Directory. Admired for his painstaking attention to detail, he soon became one of the most sought-after and well-known maritime artists of the region; his main competition was his neighbor and friend James E. Buttersworth.
The ship depicted in the painting offered here, the SS Zeeland, was a joint British and Belgian ocean liner of the Red Star Line built by John Brown and Co., Glasgow. For most of its service it ran the Antwerp-New York route. During WW I the name was temporarily changed to the less German sounding SS Northland; it was eventually changed back. The ship was removed from service in 1929, and was scrapped the following year.
