In the 17th century, floral and fruit still life paintings were symbols of wealth and abundance. Such is the case with the painting offered here, a composition bursting with watermelon, grapes, peaches, and a variety of flowers in an urn. Depictions of flowers and fresh, ripe fruits can be seen as symbols of abundance, bounty, fertility, youth, and vitality as well as referencing religious tenets, although it is not clear if this was the case with Monnoyer.

Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer was one of the most sought-after flower painters of his generation. Born in Lille, he trained in Antwerp and became an accomplished student of the traditional grand Low Country still life painting technique, despite the scientific focus popularized by his contemporaries such as Nicolas Robert. Monnoyer's opulent paintings often depicted huge urns or baskets overflowing with ornate flowers. He became popular with aristocratic clients for interior decorations in both France and England and even supplied designs to the Royal tapestry manufactories at Gobelins and Beauvais. He worked on decorations of numerous palaces throughout France, and in 1685 was invited by the First Duke of Montague to London. There he worked at the Montague House as well as Kensington Palace.
