  • Provenance: The Collection of Deborah & Eli Tullis, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notes: The setting of the marshy wetlands and Spanish moss-draped cypress trees in the painting Coterie d'Alligators, Bayou Teche reflects the French-born artist Charles Giroux's interest in the unique southern Louisiana landscape. Arriving in New Orleans after the Civil War, Giroux became a part of the local community of artists by joining the Southern Art Union and Artists' Association of New Orleans and exhibiting at S.T. Blessing's and Theodore Lilienthal's galleries.

The pristine Bayou Teche of the late 19th century bustled with wildlife, including snakes, alligators, turtles, herons, and egrets, while its waters teemed with crawfish, bass, and catfish. On the left in the present lot, an adult alligator basking in the sunlight on the shore is accompanied by a large gang of alligators, with only their eyes and snouts breaching the surface of the water. Although little is known about Charles Giroux, it is evident that he spent time at Bayou Teche where he painted many scenes of life in the isolated wetland countryside.
