  • Provenance: Sold in these galleries at the William E. Groves Estate Auction, June 7, 1993; private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notes: Cosmo John Alexander's life was dominated by his Scottish heritage and allegiance to the Jacobite cause, which aimed to restore the Stuart's catholic monarchy to the British throne. The son of a Scottish artist, he became an accomplished portraitist in both Europe and America. Alexander's support of the defeated Jacobite Rising in 1745 forced his exile from Scotland. While traveling in Europe, he earned portrait commissions, many from fellow exiled Jacobite supporters. In 1766, he traveled to the British colonies, settled in Philadelphia, and solicited portraits from the local Scottish immigrant communities.

In 1768, William Franklin, Royal Governor of New Jersey, invited Alexander to stay at the governor's mansion in Burlington. The son of American statesman Benjamin Franklin, he was a steadfast British Empire Loyalist which caused a political rift between himself and his father. Alexander stayed for several weeks receiving patrons and painting portraits. This portrait was likely painted during Alexander's extended visit at the New Jersey governor's mansion. In the portrait of William Franklin, Alexander featured a classical column revealed behind a curtain and a desk topped with an inkwell, quill pens and stack of papers symbolizing the sitter's power and significance.

A year later, Alexander accepted the fourteen-year-old Gilbert Stuart, the son of Scottish immigrants, as an apprentice. With Stuart, Alexander traveled south to Williamsburg and Charleston, earning portrait commissions.

An avid art collector, William E. Groves amassed over 1,500 paintings, prints, watercolors, daguerreotypes, and miniatures which included over fifty portraits which he stored in the expansive historic building at 502 Frenchman Street. Groves wrote,

"Collecting is a vice that breaks no competition from other vices.
It is a passion that grows and dominates until you stand trembling
before the object of your desire, determined to own it at all costs
while earnestly striving to conceal your cupidity lest it affect the price."

Groves was mentored and initially inspired to collect by Dr. Isaac Monroe Cline, U.S. Meteorologist and shop proprietor of The Art House on St. Peter Street in the French Quarter. This portrait attributed to Cosmos Alexander was previously part of the William E. Groves collection.
