August Norieri
(American/Louisiana, 1860-1898)

"Sailing on Lake Pontchartrain"

oil on canvas
signed lower right.
Period frame.
22" x 27", 29-1/2" x 34-1/2"

Notes: Born into a middle class New Orleans Italian-American family, August Norieri's brother Baptiste worked as a tugboat captain and bar pilot on the Mississippi River. Evidently, the artist became well acquainted with the variety of boats that traversed the waterways of New Orleans through his brother. Norieri studied painting with prominent local artist Andre Molinary, participated in the Creole Exhibit of the American Exposition of 1885 and was a member of the Art Association of New Orleans. The painting depicts a sailboat on a windy day with full sails crossing the rough seas of Lake Pontchartrain.
