Life of Benjamin Franklin, Containing the Autobiography with Notes and a Continuation, Boston: Tappan & Dennet, 1844, first edition thus, printed by Metcalf & Co., Cambridge, MA, 8vo., in later full tan leather, the spine with gilt bands and lettering, cut and marbleized edges and marbleized endpapers, bookplate, 9" x 6". [Ford 409] Provenance: The Collection of William Pfaff, New Orleans, Louisiana.


  • Condition: Autobiography, 1794: Some flaking at the joints and spine with minor losses at the lower extreme. Bumped corners. Owner's name and date (Cath.n Smith / 1794) in ink on the title page. Pencil marks on frontispiece recto where the verso portrait has been traced. Text with oxidation and light foxing but generally clean. A nice copy. Essays, 1811: Rubbing and wear to cover, especially at the edges, joints and bumped corners. Title label lacking on spine. Corners of text clipped. Pencil marks on inside boards. Owner's name, date and inscription (Wiley Idepond?, December 1827) in ink on rear flyleaf; the lower third of the leaf torn and lacking. Extensive foxing. Autobiography, 1844: Front joint split about 2/3 the way down, with the spine cover detached and the uppermost panel lacking. Rubbed edges and bumped corners; some soiling. Bookplate of James H. Beals. Pencil marks on flyleaves, with some pencil notations in text. Light to moderate foxing.
