Literature: Julie Baumgardner, "Playful Animal Sculptures, Inspired by Art History", The New York Times Style Magazine, October 30, 2015.

Notes: A historian and art-historian, the self-trained sculptor Bjorn Skaarup is the creator of a whimsical bestiary which references everything from classical mythology, Renaissance art, and contemporary culture. Drawing upon his extensive academic background - he has a Master's from the University of Copenhagen and a Doctorate from the European University Institute in Florence, as well as post-doctoral studies at the Warburg Institute and Columbia University - his works cleverly revel in their layers of interpretation. As the artist once said in a New York Times Style Magazine interview "I've always imagined my works to be some sort of imaginary collaboration between the old Cellini and a young Disney". The two works offered here exemplify the artists distinct approach - each can be appreciated from a purely visual perspective, but a closer examination reveals allusions to the historical, literary and cultural. The determined ostrich - one of the few flightless birds - is here depicted as a sprightly aviator with biplane wings and wearing a jaunty cap. A more perceptive viewer of the elephant sculpture will notice the self-satisfied expression and bloated belly of the recently sated tiger, feet resting on the helmet of the explorer who was most decidedly the main course of his last meal!

Skaarup's sculptures are in numerous private and public collections, including the National Cathedral, Washington D.C.; Koldinghas Museum, Denmark; Museo Cenacolo di Ognissanti, Florence; and the Hotel Cipriani, Venice. A retrospective solo exhibition of his work was held in 2016 at the Bruce Museum, Greenwich, Connecticut.
