Boston Four-Piece Coin Silver Tea and Coffee Set

third quarter 19th century, by Vincent Laforme (1823-1893) for Bigelow Brothers & Kennard (fl. 1845-1863), including a coffeepot, h. 8-1/2", a teapot, h. 7-1/4", a covered sugar bowl, h. 5-3/4", and a tea caddy, h. 5-1/2", the first three with pear-shaped bodies, acanthus-mounted handles and quatrefoil-lobed feet, the caddy of oval section, all decorated on the lid with repousse acanthus leaves surrounding an acanthus bud finial, monogrammed "MLE".
78.71 total t. oz.

  • Condition: **Some scattered bumps, dings and dents, the most significant being a fairly deep 1/2" dent on the underside and a shallow 7/8" dent on the body of the tea caddy, and a similar 1/2" dent and two dimples on the coffeepot. Surface wear and scuffs throughout consistent with age and use. Nice chasing and decoration. The joins at the insulators of the teapot are loose and have some wiggle, but there are no breaks and the retaining pins are intact. Marked (on the underside) "Bigelow Bros. & Kennard" in an arch above "Coin Boston" and the script "L" maker's mark of Vincent Laforme. A handsome set.
