  • Provenance: The Estate of Bonnie Bolding Swearingen, Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Notes: The balangandan is a good luck talisman popular in Brazil, particularly in the state of Bahia. It has its origins in the Portuguese colonial plantations and is a melding of European and African cultures. The handle was in the form of a ship (representing those which brought slaves to the New World) with two birds perched at either end (representing the continents of Africa and South America). It was suspended with an assortment of charms unique to the life journey of its owner (pomegranates for wealth, calabash and dipper for fertility, figa for good fortune, etc.), and was usually worn hanging from the belt (its name "balangandan" being an onomatopoetic representation of the sound of the dangling baubles) or, when not worn, hung near the entrance door of the home.
