Bronze Argente Lante Vase

19th century, by Ferdinand Barbedienne, Paris, after the antique pastiche by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) from fragments found at Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, signed "F. Barbedienne" on the basal edge, with Achille Collas "Reduction Mecanique" medallion on the underside.
h. 9", dia 10-1/4", w. 14-1/4"

  • Provenance: Kevin Stone Antiques, The Collection of Kevin Stone & Mark Diamond.

Notes: A companion to the more famous Warwick Vase also by Piranesi, the Lante Vase passed through several hands, including Giovanni Volpato, Colonel John Campbell and finally to the Duke of Bedford who purchased it in 1800 from Campbell's (then Lord Cawdor) estate. A monumental cast iron copy appears in the 1858 catalogue of Barbezat & Cie, Haut-Marne, and it continued to be manufactured by their successor, the Val d'Osne Foundry, into the 1870s. Barbedienne's copy appears in his 1888 catalogue as "Cratere" (Vase Consacre a Bacchus) in seven different sizes (the present lot conforming to the one-third reduction).
