  • Provenance: W.E. Seebold, New Orleans, Louisiana; private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notes: The Swedish-born Bror Anders Wikstrom spent his youth as a sailor. He gave up his maritime aspirations to pursue a career in the arts and studied at Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris. After spending a year in Florida painting the landscape, Wikstrom first visited New Orleans in 1883 when he created illustrations for the magazines Mascot and Figaro. Wikstrom returned a year later, joined the community of artists centered in New Orleans and became a founding member of the Artists' Association of New Orleans.

A talented landscape painter, Wikstrom found the Louisiana scenery a source of inspiration. The charming painting St. Tammany Roadside depicted the overgrown and rural terrain of the north shore at the turn of the century. Likely through his friendship with Swedish-born artist Charles Briton, Wikstrom became a designer of invitations, costumes and floats for the Mardi Gras krewes of Rex and Proteus.
